Mk2 golf engine into mk1

Does the engine from a mk2 1.6/1.8 go in a mk1 by just changing the engine mounts ? Do I use the gear box from the mk2 or do I need to use a mk1 gti box ?

If its a big block Mk1 Golf, its easy - as you say, just change engine mounts and a few other bits (eg manifolds). You can use any 020 gearbox from a mk1 so long as you match CVJ flange size, etc.

Cheers mate, do I need mk1 drive shafts ? I'm getting everything from the mk2 I need, I can take the hubs, breaks and anything else I can make use of

Can you give further info, eg which year and model of Mk1 and Mk2 etc

My mk1 is a 83 Y reg it was a 1.3 but had the engine mount moved for a big bloke in which I believe the last owner did but I've got it as a project so is more or less a shell now, the mk2 is on a J reg and I think its a 1.8 but not completely sure. It's got a Pierburg 2E carb on it.

You'll need a new gear linkage too, including steering rack, and the complete exhaust system, all from big block Mk1. Use the Mk2's 020 gearbox, and Mk1 big block driveshafts. Mk2 hubs are no use to you. Brakes might be, not sure.

mk2 239mm VWII calipers are same as big block mk1, but you need mk1 carriers from 1.5-1.8 or polo. mk2 carriers are cast into the bearing carrier assembly and as above no good.

check the size of the flanges on the mk2 gearbox, and get mk1 shafts to suit. they'll either be 90mm or 100mm depending on the age of the mk2 the engine came from and if its a 1.6 or 1.8. check the engien code if possible. 1.6 is EZ, 1.8 is GU

I had a look at the mk2 over the weekend and it's a GU code, I was also offered a E reg cabriolet gti with bosh injection system on it so might go with that option now as I'm guessing there will be everything I need there ? just seams like the lad wants alot for it as its no t&t and he wants £700, or is that about right ?

its worth thinking about but 700 for a car with no tnt seems a bit steep unless its in very good order? thing with cabs is if roof and seals etc are all good you can make a few bob splitting them up for spares if thats your plan

That's what I was thinking about, hopefully I'll have a few bits and bobs I can put on here and get some money back that way.

E reg cabby will have slightly different fuel tank to a hatchback GTI, so you need to make adaptions to yours eg use the lift pump from the cabby in your small block (non GTI) fuel tank. But you could use parts from it and make it work. £700 is too much for a car without tax & test, I'd start my offer at £100. There's normally a reason why a car doesn't have T&T, and that reason is normally because its worn out!
