mk1 GL Cabrio wont idle or run propperly need help please

hi every one i have a mk1 cabrio GL Auto the car is very nice apart from the car wont idle it starts and idles at 2000 rpm until the auto choke cuts off then it dies it wont start again till you pump the throttle a few times then i have to keep pumping the throttle constantly and she coughs and splutters and backfires ive changed the points condenser and fuel pump has anyone had this problem or no of a solution also after its been running when the engine has cooled down it wont start because the plugs are covered in carbon and need cleaning please help sum1 it will be much appriciated thanks

sounds like you might have some muck in the carb try cleaning the idle jet or your fast idle cam may be dropping off but the choke might not be coming off properly
