Mk 1 Golf cab gearbox help
hi there picked up a mk 1 cab today and it seems like the gearbox is gone
when i change into gear and find the biting point the gearbox makes a noise like stones rubbing together and the car does not move. been told it is the gearbox, if it is ……..
can i put a mk 2 golf 1.8 gearbox in? or even a a golf mk 2 gti gearbox in and will the moutings be the same??
Thanks

It might be something as simple as the clutch cable adjustment rather than a faulty gearbox. Worth doing a check of this area, and also selecting the gears from the box rather than the gearstick, to check out the ratios.
Mk2 gearboxes can fit, but there's issues to do with the mounting points on the diff, the flanges (90mm or 100mm) and reverse light switch wiring.
See on the left (technical section) under Gear Ratio Guide for a handy chart.
I think Mk2 driveshafts are slightly different because it was a wider car, not 100% though. But you don't need to worry about this because you can use your existing driveshafts?
