Mk 1, 1.8 clipper cuts out

Hi, I wonder if anyone can give me some pointers? My wifes car (mk 1 cabriolet, NOT GTI.) keeps cutting out. There is no pattern to it. Sometimes it will drive for weeks without a problem, then it will just keep cutting out without warning. Then it will be ok again for a while. In the summer we drove from the south up to York in it and it was fine for several weeks, then it cut out. No warning. One minute running fine, the next it's not. It has only done 76000 miles. The fuel filler pipe has already been replaced.
Any help appreciated……

Many thanks,

Craney.

When the filler pipe was replaced was the tank cleaned out?

If not there is probably lots of rust/muck/water in it that may be blocking the fuel lines. :dontknow:

or… is the carb pre-heat pipe connected, VWs are reknown for iceing up their carbs in damp weather

or…. a lose electrical connection

or the fuse box has been damaged by water getting into it

or its not unknown for the ignition switch to play up.

When it does stop how long before it will re-start and run OK?

cheers mate,
There is no set pattern. It will start again straight away. It's an automatic, so if you keep up the revs, you can drive on the brake!!! not ideal though.

So after it cuts out it won't run unless you rev it? Sounds like a fuel blockage :dontknow:

Does it slow down and loose power or just stop dead when it happens :dontknow:

Got it sorted mate, thanks anyway. I changed loads of electical bits, including the coil and now it is brilliant.
