mixture adjusting

how do you go about altering the mixture on a 1.8 8v carb clipper??

advice greatly appreciated

Using the CO adjusting screw on the carb - if you've got a haynes manual there will be a diagram showing the location of the screw. It's should be a Pierburg 2E2 carb, unless you've had a Weber fitted at some point.

i definately havent had a webber fitted but its possible it has had at some point in its life. Any tell tale signs??

It currently got a k&n bolted directly on top.

I removed the k&n on the weekend and the carb looks pretty clean to look at.
Its got 2 chambers - one nearer the front of the car has the auto choke flap in it, and the nearer the bulkhead didnt seem to have any purpose???

Yea if it's had a Weber fitted it will now be a manual choke. If, as you seem to suggest, it's still an automatic choke, it'll still be the original Pierburg 2E2. Does it run OK? The Pierburg on my old Mk2 was bolloxed and no amount of adjusting the mixture screw would get the CO emissions back to within legal limits. And generally speaking these carbs will always prove troublesome eventually and the advice is almost universally to swap it for a Weber. But if yours is running OK then I guess leave it as it is for the time being! Anyway, have a look at this exploded diagram:

Part no. 10 is the CO mixture screw. You can see it sits inside a shaft that protrudes from the top of the carb once you've got the air filter off.

You can see just to the left of the choke flap the grey tube sticking up - that's what you're after.
