electrical, maybe, try replacing spark plugs ht leads dizzy cap, rotor arm, coil.

mines injection, so i dont know anything about the carb models,

when an old coil gets too hot it expands and breaks the contact or summat

ive had this problem for a while try searchin my threads for some more pointers

mate mine has now got me in a complete state of depression, i dont know what else to do with mine, i have no idea about car wiring
but you have an advantage  with carbs as theres less to go wrong, if your confident about the rest of the system then i figure its electrical

i reckon its got to be electrical on mine, a wire somewhere that breaks a contact because of heat,
how i go about finding it god knows,
if you find summat please let me know!!

i would put this up in the relevant engine section on the index, youd probably get more response from others more knowledgable than me

sorry dude :dontknow:

Guys, sounds like same problem as Risingforce32 (recent post). Is your filler neck rusty?? Although you have changed your tank there may still be rust coming from your fuel filler pipe or bits of rust still stuck in the fuel pipe to the engine which is starving your engine of fuel.

As you said, it got better when you put the new tank in but there is still a problem of some sort.

Try undoing your fuel filter and blow back into the pipe to the fuel tank to see if this clears it.

nice one  matey

i admit to feeling a bit stupid, i cleaned/changed it all bar the pipes, how daft is that, gonna run the airline thro it 2mo
it looks like theres 2 lines underneath, should i do em both, im assuming one is the return,  and the fuel lines from the metering head?

Not sure with the gti but prob wont do any harm to do both. In theory, any rust in the pipes would eventually be caught by the filter so you should only really need to do the feed pipe from the tank to the filter.

One is the feed and the other the return, you should be able to tell as the feed will have the filter on it (is it a big metal can type filter, like on my quattro??)

I just used to blow back (with me gob!!) down the fuel pipe from the tank by undoing the fuel filter and this would stop it for a while.
At least until next time, or until the rust came through and was caught by the filter.

Cheers
