Mileage from a tank of fuel?
What sort of mileage should I be expecting from a full tank of fuel?
I know it depends on driving style etc but a rough idea would be good!
The car's a 1.6 carb.

Is there anything I check to see if it's over-fuelling?
Spark plugs?
The exhaust doesn't seem black and i'm not aware of any smoke coming from the exhaust at idle or on the move.
Should add, I've checked for leaks too but all the pipework seems to be fine so I don't think it's losing fuel anywhere. :dontknow:

From experince carb'd MK1s give 25-40mpg+ with average @35 ish on a decent run, GTI 1.8 again 30-40 with high 30s on a run and diesel Caddy would do 45-55mpg depending on load and type of journey.

Which way do you turn the mixture screw to make it more lean?

Could be down to lots of factors - tyre pressure, brakes binding slightly etc?

I wouldn't think it that wise just to go playing with your mixture screw just because you think your fuel economy is bad!

Well I suspect its running rich due to the carbon deposits in the exhast, although that could be from when it was running cold cos the thermostat was opening too early…
Someone told me at the Berkshire meet that turning it one way until it starts hunting, turn it the other way until it stars hunting, count number of turns, then turn it back half way until peak RPM then lean it off abit :dontknow:
Too lean means running too hot and too rich means downed MPG hence why I aint touched it… maybe look at the spark plugs?

Definitely check the plugs I reckonToo lean means running too hot and too rich means downed MPG hence why I aint touched it… maybe look at the spark plugs?
That method you described sounds decent enough, though not the sort of thing I like to attempt personally (I usually make a mess of stuff given half the chance! ). Do you have a friendly garage that could look at it? Then they could check your emissions to see how much unspent fuel actually ends up the exhaust.

I get less out of it if I drive with the roof down a lot.

filled up then completed 330 miles (1/3 with the roof down) 80% m/Way fast A road.
and then filled up again took 39.15 litres
so I work that out at around 38 miles per gallon.
So given speedo always over ambitious, around 35 per gallon.
