Making me Dizzy

Not sure what's causing this problem so I thought i would just post this in here.

I've had my 93 clipper for a month now and ever since I bought her she has been ideling a little low at around 500-600 rpm.

Went out for a drive yesterday morning and she started fine first time but then stalled at the first corner.

Now every time the revs fall below 1000 she cuts out completely. No back fire or anything just dies quick as a flash.

She always starts again fine and is fine if I keep the revs up. She also bump starts fine if you are moving.

Can anyone give me any hints on what might be wrong. Read a recent thread about faulty Dizzies or Hal Senders but not sure if that may be the problem.

I think this may be a common problem so hopefully someone can help me.

Thanks

sounds like a carb problem, does it still have the origional solex? also check all breather pipes for cracks/breaks

So many dubs so little time, so much rust

I had a similar problem and was advised to simply adjust it at the throttle cable. with a 7mm spanner. Perhaps it's had a new cable fitted and it wasn't adjusted properly.

Anyway adjusting it worked for me!!!

Thanks for the advice again guys.

One of the air intake hoses had been worn through by rubbing against the clutch cable so I replaced that. I also put jubilee clips on one of the hoses between the carb and the engine, as ther were none.

I also adjusted the throttle cable. The outer cable was just held by a spring clip so I refitted thet at the very end of the cable. There was also a an allen key adjustment that stopped the throttle coming all the way off so I adjusted that to its maximum.
I was very excited when I started the car and after a brief struggle she ideled at a nice 1000 rpm  :)  Unfortunately that didin't last as by the time I reached the second corner she was back to dieing again every time I took my foot off the gas :(

The car has a peirsburg carb (is that the same as a Solex?) which i assume is original. Do you reckon thats the problem as i'm sure it's not cheap to replace? Also I assume replacing it is a garage job as it talks about scary CO2 level and the likes in Haynes?

Thanks again guys

VW switched from Solex to Pierburg at some point in the 80's. A Webber carb is better, but replacing the carb is a bit of a drastic measure for such a running problem. If it is a carb probelm a clean, check and rebuild kit should sort it as long as there is no damage/scouring to the barrel.

Have you checked the ignition componants and what about the vacuum pipes to and from the carb? These are small and can sometimes get blocked with dirt or turn brittle causing idling problems. Also whats the fuel filler neck and breather system like?

Changing a carb isn't that difficult to do (just don't drop any bits into the inlet manifold 8O). You can take it to a garage after to get the CO checked.

Cheers for the advice Mark

Call me  a coward but I have booked the car into the garage to have the carb checked over and cleaned. Guy reckoned it would cost around ?40 and since you could write all I know a bout crabs on the head of a pin probably the best option.

Hopr that solves the problem otherwise I'll be on the look out for a Weber. Is it true that you cannot buy then new anymore?

Think you can still get new webers from www.webcon.co.uk . They did freeze production a year or so ago, but last I heard they started up again.

Was rather funny

New Webber is still in its box as my old carb is still running sweet after its visit to the garage.
