Could be the rocker cover gasket , have you cleaned the engine and then run it to pin point exactly where its coming from ?

This will help to find your cure , rocker cover leaks are quite common .

cheers will replaced, looked underneath the car, and the oil is dripping from the top down and has actually completely covered the rear of the block and underneath the cambelt cover.

Do the big blocks have the oil breather on them?  :dontknow:  (It's a half tennis ball sized thing with a pipe sticking out the top of it, at the back of the block) If so it might be that, I had one get blocked on a 1.1c and it pissed oil everywhere, good thing is though its a cheap fix, but an absolute pain to fit.  :banghead:

Oil leak

I had a similar issue replaced my rocker top gasket and noticed oil dripping from back of sump, looked like my source was the rocker top it was running out travelling behind the crankshaft cover etc down the back of the engine/sump and dripping from there.
I would check each stud for any oil give them a quick tighten up clean the engine of any oil including back of block and see if you can spot where its coming from after a drive similar to what Chudd said.
Took me a while fingers crossed mine is ok now, just about to make a routine check make sure.
All the best.

If your going to change the rocker cover gasget.theres a replacement one piece VW kit (part number 026198025c) you have to change the studs.but should prove to be a better seal  than the standard cork ones.oh yeah, and you wont find bits of it in your sump!
