Lots of Questions

Hello Guys

I'm new to the forum and new to golfs and i have loads of questions and i hope that someone might have the time patients and answers  :D

Ok so the car is a 1988 karmann Clipper with a 1.8 petrol engine. Is this engine an overhead cam? if so does it run hydrolic lifter and are these pron to draining when stood for a long time?

The engine has had a carb upgrade to a webber unit. Does this give any meaningful power increase or is it purely just reliability?

Even though the car is pretty much mint 62k from new and oly 500 miles in the last year it does need some work and i hope everyone on here will bear with me when asking for assistance.

Thanks for listening and hopefully helping.

Mark.

Hi there

I'm fairly new myself but should be able to answer you correctly.

Your correct the engine is an overhead cam but it doesn't have hydraulic lifters. It is advisable to checks the clearances between your cam and followers from time to time. Get a haynes and they should be able to give you the tolerances.

I don't think it will have any great performance increase but they are alot more reliable. If you have trouble with your fueling then chances are it's a problem with your vacuum hoses perishing, carb to manifold gasket, blocked fuel lines then the carb itself. There is also a filter in the carb which requires cleaning from time to time too.

Once setup correctly you should have some trouble free and reliable running.

Just remember how old the car is and that things wear out, corrode or perish but when working properly is a lot of fun
