getting your timing set.

you are suffering from pre ignition.

can be casued if engine running a little too hot, had this when my fan packed in during a blazing hot summer. I've also had this caused by excessive carbon buildup in the bores, i cured this by sp[raying half a can of carb cleaner direct into the carb while it was running. shoulda seen the foot long carbon stain that left on the driveway ;)

or a shot of redex will do the same.

just aim the exhaust away from the house before you do it. (and make sure the neighbors are out)

bit of water tricled into the carb also works, but you have to hold the revs up. it vapourises in the combustion chambers and give the cylinder a lovely steam clean

nice.

my car faces out onto a raod with lots of people parked on it. i did it when someone had parked across the end of my drive. the owner was not best pleased when he came out to find a very black side to his car. but if he is arrogent enough to park across my drive while i'm actually stood there then it's tough.

I had problems with the over run valve a few times,

I'm liking the idea of the engine steam clean! Could do with giving the gti a internal, tho not sure how I'd get the water in?

on the gtis you disconnect a thin vac hose from the throttle body, dunk it in a jug o water and rev it a bit :)

yeah as if a small vac hose could suck up enough water to hydro lock an engine ;)
I've done exactly that on my own GTI, and would do it again no fear :)
