Jerky drive selection on 1980 1.6 carb Auto

When I select Drive the engine seems to really strugle and the gear selection is very jerky when idle and drive is selected.

Any help gratfully received.

Could well be low or dodgy ATF (automatic transmisson fluid). This can cause jerkyness and slow pick up of gears, particlularly when pulling away from a standstill. Check ATF level and refill if neccesary - consult your Haynes when doing this - think car needs to be warmed up and fluid checked with engine running.
