i know nowt about carb engines help!

ive found a beauty of an 83 cab thats been stood for a year, im gonna try and save it from the scrappy,tis a 1600
the pierburg carbs knackered that i know
what other issues should i be aware of ?

can i get a basic description of how the carb thingy works please.
