hummer MPG from my 1.5... plz help:D

as some of you might have read. ive just got the car on the road this week, its got its MOT next week, and im worried about it failing on the emmissions (as it did last year from wat i can see on the previous MOT).. the cars a 1.5 auto, running a weber carb so theres no return fuel line from it.
Ive done a compression test and its all ok (10 bar), so its not that, the car idles at 1500 with the choke off so that needs doing i know. where is the idle speed screw on th webers?

another strange thing is the revs get lower when you put the choke on, which is something ive never experienced before??

the cars getting about 15-20 MPG if that, so if anyone has any suggestions please come forward

That may be due to the carb running far too rich , does it omitt black sooty smoke on idle ? To much fuel and the wrong mixture would cause this .


I would think a good service and tune up would help the consumption figures . I do not have the exact information on how to adjust the Webber but have a troll through   http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=7 this section and the answer will be there . The automatics were never very economical but yours should give well over 34mpg .

cheers mate ive had a bit of a read through old posts. i cant seem to find out which way i want to turn this mixture screw to lower the mixture though. ill check the timings set right, then adjust it untill its running right.

 any explanations for the idle dropping when i put the choke on?  the car started fine about 1/2 hour ago with no choke, and its damp and cold.  i think it could be as its running so rich, then its over chokeing it when i turn it on, causing it to splutter a wee bit :wink: thanks for the help
