Hi Guys,
So the MK1 has been off the road for about 3 years now as I went gallivanting around Oz for a while, Got back and treated myself to a MK5 Golf R32 but as I was working away alot I never had time to get anything done to the Mk1 and get the poor old gal back on the road.
Anyway, As of November a kind old lady decided to plough into the side of the R32 and write it off :'( and now I kind of need the MK1 back on the road asap.
I have sent my Starter motor off for a refurb and am hoping that this will help me actually get it started.. She turns over but doesn't quite fully get there and start up.. I have also got new leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, plugs and battery amongst other little bits and bobs to freshen her up.

Has anyone had any problems with having there's standing and then not being able to get it started again after trying numerous things?

Thanks in advance

Good luck - sorry to hear about the R32 - definite future classic those…

anyway, back to MK1…after three years, the fuel may need changing…

If you haven't done so, try using fresh fuel…

And assuming its a carb model, the carb floats may need a 'jiggle' too

I know mate, Did love my R32..Great cars and definite future classics!
But yes back to the mk1 lol.. I kind of gave her some new fuel about a month ago when tryin to get her started etc.. I only put a couple of gallons in there tbh.
Is it worth taking the carb off maybe and trying to give it a good old clean?
Cheers

I'm no mechanic, I'm afraid - assuming you have sparks (rest a HT lead on the block / rocker cover and crank over and see if a spark is jumping then its possible that fuel is the issue.  I would start buy checking that fuel is arriving at the carb - take the fuel pipe off the carb and have a friend crank her over and see if petrol is being delivered - pop the pipe into some kind of bottle to catch the fuel that is hopefully arriving :)

if its not, you could then try feeding the carb from an alternative fuel supply (fill a bottle with petrol and pop the fuel supply pipe in there and see if it starts). I would start by disconnecting the pipe before the fuel pump - that is to say the feed to the pump and feeding from there - if it does start you have at least identified that fuel isn't getting from the tank to the pump. if it doesn't, perhaps then try feeding the carb in a similar way but gravity fed from the 'fuel bottle' by inserting the pipe that goes immediately into the carb - if it starts, your fuel pump might be seized…
