Check your earthing connections and connections on fuse box, dont know what year yours is, mine is an 82 x with the bullet type fuses, i had earthing problems, car would fire and straight away cut out, boiled down to fuse box goosed, fitted new one and she runs a dream.
It could be other things and am sure someone else can help here with more experience on mk1's than myself.

First thing to do would be determine if you're getting a spark. Using a spare spark plug, take off one of the ignition leads and place the spark plug on the head so its outer part is earthed, and turn over the engine.
