high revving / over run - please help

Hi All - Need some help!

I have an 89 clipper cabriolet (carb) which has a problem with idling. A few months ago I took it to have the carb stripped and cleaned but now, when cold (and for the first 10 miles or so) the car idles at around 3000 revs - I need to disengage the clutch almost totally to keep the revs when down when stopped. I have noticed there is a "rod" that comes out when the accelerator is pressed - this seems to stay out at times! - The problem sometimes goes when the car is warm. The car also overuns when I turn the ignition off (and misfires).

Please help…..

Check your vaccum hoses, they may have been wired up wrongly, also check for leaks and splits.

It is supposed to rev very high to start with (on some carbs) then decrease in steps, its a feature of the auto-choke system. Not too sure about this car though sorry.

What carb is fitted? Does it have a auto choke?
The over run and mis fire is down to it running to rich, take the spark plugs out and check the colour of them.

Sounds like dodgy auto choke.

with the rod do you mean the one on the 3/4 point unit? if so then this is likely the issue if its stuck out. as above it should stay out for a bit on a cold start but no more then a few seconds.  check the vac lines as mentioned, nice colour coded diagram for em in my guide ;)

also make sure you have ignition live to both of the plugs for the vacuum units on the back of the carb, if not look at fuses 17 and 18 to start with.

It's a pier burg auto choke,I've replaced all small hoses and no change.I've been told it could be the stepper motor on rear of carb!! O_o  the wiring is cut to one of the plugs don't no where it goes! But when the weather is warm I don't have a prob the carb seams to function fine

there is no stepper motor on the 2e2 carb, possibly they meant the 3/4 sticks out which would do this. have you chwecked it all over as per my guide? best to check everything!

if you must root around in my sig look gfor the haynes2e2manual.pdf, but this one is more advanced tuning which should only be done after you have checked everything over as per my normal 2e2 guide :)
