Hesitation on acceleration problems - help please

Hi im new to the forum and desperately need help with my mk1, its a 1.8 cabrio running a weber carb.

The problem is when I accelerate whilst driving it tends to hesitate when i put my foot down and it wont go above 4,000 revs when it does this it sounds really rough, however when its stationary and I rev it there seems to be no hesitation and no weird noise either, I have changed the plugs, leads, rotor arm, airfilter and checked the timing using a timing light also the vacuum pipes from the dizzy and the inlet manifold.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated has anyone had simular symptoms and how did you cure it.

Many thanks in advance oldbluemk1.

Hi Jellybelly the timing I have set it to is using the arrow marker on the timing cover and the notch on the pulley which are marked up white, they are both inline when I check the timing at tick over, is there another setting for weber carbs?

I just checked the manual it is 17 - 19 btdc:), I used a stroboscopic timing gun to set the timing with the dizzy vacuum pipe blocked off and the marks still match up.
Another thing to note is the engine runs on a little when I pull up and turn off the engine any ideas anyone?

you need a timining gun that you can set to 17 - 19 btbc so you can get it right
