Help whit my 1.6 golf whit Carburetor, valve timing

Hi  :banghead:
I put on a knew head on my car and now i am struggling whit my cars timing, i put all the marks on there places before i removed the head but now when i put it back it sounds like an old diesel whit one cylinder, the head is the same one i took of they just replaced all the parts one it.

I put the cam mark level whit the head and the crank pulley on the mark on the belt cover and the rotor i put on the number one piston mark in the distributer but nothing is working so i don't know if i am put the cam mark on the wrong side of the head or what? Is there other marks i can use or must use to do the timing right?

The car is a 1994 model 1.6 golf whit a 8 valve head on it and a Carburetor

So if anyone can help me it will be very much appreciated or can show me some foto's to see how the marks must be. It's now been 4 days that i am struggling to fix the car :banghead:

It could be that you have put the cam in 180 degrees out? When taking it apart and putting it back together it's worth putting more than one mark on the pulley wheel.
Before starting up turn the engine over by hand.

did you use the correct timing point on the cam pulley? You have to use the innerpoint.

Be sure that the rotor points to the first cilinder and the first piston is just on his way down (point of ingition).

All the timing marks should be correct.

I'd like the way it goessssssss !

Hi all Tanks for all the advice but the problem was that the guys that don the head for me ditn't sized the valves correctly sou there wasn't any compression in number 1 and number 4 pistons. but that is right now now my problem is wen the car is cold it doesn't want to ref or idle correctly i have to leave it for a wail so that it warms up and then it runs like a dream, i had put on a brand new carburetter and don a compression test and the timing is the best it can be so i don't know if it can be the distributer or the module?

Did they do a 1.6 in 1994? I thought the last of the cabbys were all 1.8, and had been since about 1988???

Thanks a lot for all the Pictures it help t a lot. All my timing marks was on its places but only one wasn't it was the pulley for the distributer but what i do is to take out the distributer en turn it so that it is on its place on number 1 but the crank and the cam pulley's was on the right places. And the only other advice i got is to see if my distributer have any play on it because if it has any play, then it can mean it doesn't spark correctly and wen it is warm the play is gone and it works right so i don't know any more what to do because when the car is warm the car runs like a dream and gives me about 14km to a liter so that is not to bad. All i do now is to let the car idle for a wail so that its a bit warm, then i can ref the car and go but if she still could she starts easy but won't ref and wen i ref her she mis fires like mad only until she's warm and when she is warm then i can go and she runs like a dream. To Paul_c you see us in South Africa gets all the strange makes of the cars hehe.
