Help please! how do i fit a new water coolant tank

Bought a new water coolant tank but not sure how to fit it.
Also what is the hole in the middle? is something suppose to screw in there?

The hole in the middle is for a low level sensor. If you don't have one of these to transfer from your old bottle, a blanking plug is available from somewhere.

Drain coolant take all hoses of from old header and pull the old tank up, it might be a bit stiff, where did you get it from? I could do with a nice clean one!

Did your old tank have a sensor fitted? If it didn't I wouldn't worrie about fitting one!

No my old one hasnt got a sensor, so im just going to put one in the new one but not wire it up and then it wont let air in.

hi

you will need to re-bleed the the cooling system of Air :-

yip buy the correct tank as discussed
then drain coolant ( disconnect bottom radiater hose at water pump)
fit tank as above
you havnt actually lost all the coolant in the system ( the thermostat in the pump housing will be holding it back from the engine end )
so now re-top up a mix of 50/50 antifreeze until it levels out on max line on new header tank
then start the motor with the coolant cap off
let the motor run until the bottom coolant pipe gets hot again ( thats your indictaion the thermostat has operated )normallly near the half way mark on your water temp gauge ( keep topping up tank during the warm up peried if required )
when the stat opens you might get bubbles/air escaping from the coolant system via the new tank ( all normal )
now its timw to switch engine off & let it cool
I would do this process normally twice
then stick the cap on ( make sure its a Blue cap as well )

phew!
drive & enjoy

cheers

Why a Blue cap?

Hi

VW discontinued the Black caps due to problems a long time ago ; the blue caps have a different design & are more reliable at releasing pressure at the correct setting you can see the change in design on the underside of the caps.

Mine still has the original black cap and the engine temp runs at a constant half way. Would there be any point in replacing mine even though im having no trouble as yet?
