help me with advice please

Ok,,this is getting frustrating, this is my problem?.
When I drive my car just switches off, and I have to bring the car to a complete stop and than start it up again and it goes fine afterwards. Sometimes the car goes fine for about a month and than all of a sudden it starts switching of again.Whats been happening lately is that I hear gunshots sound coming from my exhaust and than it switches off?I took it to a mechanic and he checked the fuel pump and fuel filter and the carburatter and he said that it fine..what else could be the problem, I don?t know what to do , please help me with advice. Its been happening for the last 2 years now.I have a golf1 99 model carburatter 1.6

When you say switching off do you mean everything dies or just the engine?  Does anything electrical work?  Does it always restart once you have stopped?

Thats a weired one mate.
I take it you mean the ignition stays on but the engine cuts out and the rev counter drops to zero.

Try replacing the fuel pump relay.  would be a good start as this maybe failing and being reset when you restart.
