Head gasket

I hope not...

Whilst I've been having carb icing issues recently I've had my head under the bonnet quite alot! I've noticed that on my rocker cover breather(little k&n type) I have a bubbling dirty gunk looking type liquid, it's all sat in the base of the filter bubbling away, I assume this to be boiling water mixed with oil, I also have abit of gunk under the filler cap but it's not extreme, I checked my oil on the dipstick and there is no gunk or water streaks in the oil at the bottom but there is abit of gunk on the dipstick nearer to the top of it! Is this head gasket/head failure? Or could it be something else? Or could it possibly be due to my carb icing some tiny amount of water is entering my engine with the fuel mixture?

Thanks for any replies

It's unlikely that the carb icing has caused any oil contamination.

Are you doing lots of short journeys? This would lead to condensation build up without the engine getting hot enough to boil it off; especially with the breather filter fitted rather than the usual breather pipe back to the air inlet system. The K&N will allow the crankcase to breath but wont actively 'draw' the crankcase gases and water vapour out of the engine.

I would clean up the gunky bits, check your oil and water levels and check it again after a while; maybe a few days depending on the mileage your doing. It's always good to look for other symptoms before making work for yourself changing a head gasket.

Does it have a heat exchanger type oil cooler? That is another point of failure leading to oil contamination.

Hi thanks for your reply! No it doesn't have an oil cooler as its just a 1.6 carb version and I'm sure there isn't one installed so that rules that out! I do do alot of short journeys as I use it daily for work and only work 2 miles away but the road is uncycleable unless you've got a death wish lol so that's probably the root of my problems by the sound of it! I have an oil catch tank but I haven't fitted it, do u think this could help at all or just mask any problems?
I'm changing the oil tomorrow anyway so will see what comes out then I can keep an eye on its condition throughout the week!
The head gasket was only replaced 3000 miles ago so I will be mad if if has gone, had the head work done by the best guy in town aswel so wouldn't think it was that either

You're doing a lot of short runs that could be the cause,   basically the condensation in the top of the engine cover because of the engine being warm but not hot …If this is the case no need to panic . . Check the oil and water levels,  clean away the gunk take it out for a good run , keeping an eye on the temperature . Then when you return check the oil and water again once the engine has cooled
