Golf GX 1.5 51kw Solex Carb
I have a parts request, but I'm not sure this is the right place for it, but I'll bash on anyway.
After some intermittent engine problems (sputtering, loss of power etc) my local VW garage have diagnosed that my carburettor is on it's way out.
Trouble is, I'm told that the carb in my car is rare/ obsolete and/ or nigh on impossible to get a hold of. I think its a Solex 51 KW 1457cc Carb, but I'm not certain. The auto-choke still works, more or less, which I also gather is a rarity!
Basically I'm having intermittent momentary "flat spots" which are causing the car to judder horribly under normal driving conditions. It happens probably every other minute and particularly on startup.
I've been told that the butterflies are worn and sticking, but I have no idea what that means!
Does anyone know where I might find a second hand or aftermarket part that will suit, or know anyone able to repair the unit at a reasonable price in the Edinburgh and Scottosh central belt area?? My local VW garage are basically saying the carb is past it…
Thanks in advance!

Thats a point, i know weber do carbs for 1.6 & 1.8 (Pierburg 2e2 replacment) and 1.3 (2e3 replacement),but what weber carb would go on a 1.5 as my friend has one also and would be good to know if ever he has problems with hiscrazycar said
go for a webber much better

But i have recently put a weber on my 1.6 and it is   pretty good. As crazycar says, swapping inlet manifolds for a 1.6 and getting a common 32/34 DMTL and rejetting it could be the easiest way for the 1.5 to get weber power. Hmm, but are the manifolds a straight swap?
cheers

Crash Bang Wallop!!
Limped home from work today in the golf - had to chance it as my wife was using the other car. Big bangs and huge clouds of billowing black smoke from my exhaust - can only assume backfiring, but not sure as never experienced it before…
I'm hoping that's symptomatic of the duff carburettor, as I'd be gutted if it's something else!
Can someone reassure me that all these are connected!?
Cheers!

My girl has a GX and its now got a recoed JB block with a manifold off a twin throat audi 80 (early) motor that has been slightly modifyed and fitted with a twin barrel weber. It basically goes like a rocket is as smooth as and can cruise easily at about 80mph all day if you wanted it to. they have excellent gear ratios and a good comfort handling comprimise. One of the best golfs ever made I recon.

Do you have any details about exactly which manifold it is (car/model/year etc) and also the Weber specification please ?
Many Thanks

Problem sorted
Well, I recently had a Mk1 specialist look at the carburettor, and after about half an hour it was set and working fine.
The "hunting" problem I was experiencing was actually due to a faulty ignition switch - basically the engine was switching off and on when I was driving along 8O
The carb was fine - turned out the fast idle wasn't set correctly by the VW garage, and worse still the live feed wasn't even connected. It now runs perfectly…
Except now I've sprung a pretty bad leak from the rocker cover gasket and there's a bloody great hole in the rear axle subframe… ach well!
Have a look at my other posts if you want more info
