its dead easy mate, get the frint of the car up on stands, alternatopr belt off, crank and waterpump pulleys off,  top and bottom cambelt covers off, tipex mark the crank& block, the int. pulley&block, the cam pulley&head, loosen tensioner, old belt off, new belt on making sure all your tipex marks line up, pulleys and covers back on, turn it over twice by hand with a socket on the crank pulley then re-check your marks line up - if they do you're done! but if they dont loosen the tensioner and line the marks up again and repeat.

theres a guide here - (47) Golf Gti Mk2 1.8 Setting The Timing Of The Engine - YouTube - it shows a Mk2 but tis the same procedure..

HTH!

Take it easy ; )

Hello all just saw this old thread and wanted to know is this how easy it is like ( big nick) has said or do I have to make sure the punch mark on the cam pulls is marked up next to the rocker head cover, or can I just tippex some marks on all the pulleys ( any where on the pulleys and cover) and loose. My tensioner remove my belt and then completely remove my tensioner and then refit the the tensioner and replace the belt, ajust tensioner so I get 90 degrees turn on long run and then turn the crankshaft using a socket 2 times make sure my likes match up, or do I have to go under the distributor cap ( ignition. Timing ) and look at the fly wheel and other marking, hope some one can help will be my first cambelt change

if it was me i would go by factory marks, but yes you can tipex your own if you prefer.

the rotor arm will spin freely once the belt is off but as long as you're aware and keep an eye on the position its no problem ;)
