Getting Shot of the 1.6 engine!

After problem after problem with my engine I've decided to go for something different.

I Just want a near on straight swap if possible nothing to complicated, fancy or fast just a nice reliable 1.6 or 1.8.

Its a 1982 mk1 golf GL with pierburg carb on it.

any one got any ideas? or an engine for that matter!?

Can you give more details on the engine problems you perceive?

I doubt if the problems are actually the engine, its much rather the ancillaries or tuning etc. If you replace the engine, it will have same/similar ancillaries, and the same problems, unless you change eg carb to FI. Definitely more details needed please.

Hey, well firstly the head gasket is defiantly gone and the cooling system is over pressurizing. Then when i try and tune the carb it doesn't seem to have any effect what so ever I had it on the gas analyzer and the Hc's are sky high and just yesterday on idle it ran fine then going up the road in it the engine has a massive hesitation and hardly any power at all.

basically i got annoyed and just want it out, am i jumping the gun a bit?

Well yes, if the head gasket has definitely blown, then that needs sorting out. Not worth trying to tune up until that's sorted.

I don't know how 'different' than a 1.6 carb you want to fit. 1.8 and 2.0 8V big blocks, on carb, would be a good choice.

yeh something like a 1.8 carb would be nice, I'm not fussed about speed just want a good running car.

Is there much work needed to fit a 1.8 or 2.0?

Not really, no. There's a few extra jobs to do if fitting a 2 litre, the engine conversions article I wrote a while ago should explain it (has a few links on it).

As suggested repair teh gasket, it is a simple process just take your time, and get with the gaskit kit new head bolts, never re fit old ones as they stretch over time due to hot and cold etc.
Don' keep driving the car about whilst head is as it is, your going to make it worse.
Pierburgs are a pain, me personally with all the electronic parts on them i'd be spending money on all sorts of parts and maybe still not cure the issue, so i went over to weber manual carbs on my first vw a scirocco back in the day, wow the memories lol.
no matter what car i bought i put a weber on, never been let down by one as yet.
Do gasket, get a 32/34dmtl weber carb, might aswell get new cambelt and tensioner, do timing and aslong as all other parts, plugs, leads, cap rotor arm, fuel are in good working order or already been replaced, you can have a cracking engine bud.
As mentioned no point getting another engine as it is not just the block that makes you move

Hey, I ment 1.5 CL sorry.

Would I still use that weber carb? or is it different for a 1.5 and in that case also do you have any ideas of where to get a cheap carb kit?

Thanks
