Getting more from a tired 1800

Recently bought this MK1 1800 golf and quite happy with it. Would actually like to get more from this here engine, but don't really want to swop it out for 2L. What can be done to this here tired old 1800 to get it going like new… or just faster than it is running currently  :D

if its tierd more bhp could kill it! maybe a rebuild and rebore could help but hard to say without knowing the car.

top end rebuild will probably restore a lot of lost hp, and will increase the lifespan of the engine considerably. tho not really worth it if you then decide its not enough power and you want to bung something else in.
