Getting hot hot hot ....

I've got a MK1 cab 1.6 gl auto 1985.  She's got a Pierburg carb.

The problem is that she runs pretty hot all the time, the temp is between half and full.  The heater matrix and heater valve were replaced within 100 miles.  The fan kicks in (well it did when I turned her off last night), there's water in there expansion tank.

When she's really hot she over runs too.

What else should I try or look at ?

Cheers M

Check thermostat is working ok. Also, have you changed oil/filter recently? I know it sounds daft but I tend to find after changing oil, temp is a lot more steady on mine.

When matrix etc changed, did you flush cooling system? Maybe worth doing?

Oil filter hasn't been done for a while to be honest, I'll pick one up.  I've got some semi synthetic oil, would you use that or get some standard miniral stuff ?

The thermostat has not been changed because I whipped it out and it worked when I heated it in a pan.  Suppose it wouldn't hurt to change it.

The system appears blockage free and there is water flow.

Could the diaphram on the carb do this ? as I know its not working properly (its stuck and hence I have no choke at the moment.

If thermostat works then I guess no need to change. I used high mile GTX oil on mine as head needs work but semi-synthetic should be ok.

nahh not the carb mate (only for cold running), if the stats working you should be able to feel the pipe getting hot :) is this when you are stuck in traffic or just general? how often is the fan coming in? i cant see how oil would affect engine overheating on a normally cool running engine. does it use any oil or water? (like loads) if its getting hot when you are in lower gears might be worth swapping thermo-switch on rad. check when the fan is coming in on the temp guage (the temp guage aint always 100% reliable)

is it really hot or your guage reading high?  Put some decent antifreeze in when you put it all back together after flushing.  Check timing as this can cause an engine to run hot.
