fuelling issue? 1.8 Carb cuts out when it heats up...`

Hi All,

Had my car for a few weeks and inevitably the cracks have started to appear.

It has recently developed a problem, that after a little drive, as soon as it heats up, the car just coughs a little and stalls and then refuses to start again.

It still has the original 2e2 carb and I have noticed some air bubbles in the fuel lines? Could this be an issue?

Only thing I can get it start again with is power start, which is obviously not very practical on a long term basis.

In addition, when she has been left overnight, she refuses to start in the morning.  Take about 10-15 cranks for her to keep in.

Really wanna get this sorted so I can have a bit of reliability in my life!!!

Thanks,

Natalie.

It could be a couple of different things:

- perished rubber fuel lines, drawing in air
- rust/dirt in the fuel system (inspect filler neck and tank, remove the access cover under the rear seat to look into it)
- faulty auto choke

could be parts of the ignition system breaking down when hot, or perhaps your fuel pump is getting tired.
next time it happens take the feed pipe off the car and crank it over till fuel comes out then fit it back on. if car starts after you do that then pump is likelyt to be the casue.  Obviously take every precaution against fire when doing this, especially if engine is hot!  This was exactly what the aa man did on my dads 1.3 when it kept doing this, could see it took a long time for the pump to start kicking fuel out.

if you have an inductive timing light, hook it up to all 5 leads to check you have a spark when cranking, if you do this will most likely rule out ignition problems, though it wont tell you how strong the spark is, for that you'll need to whip out a plug and lie it on the rocker cover or somewhere metal and physically look at it.  Dont touch it with your bear hands, it'll give you a fair old jolt

It could also be fuel vapourisation, if your fuel/vapour separator has been bypassed, etc etc

I'd always check for muck and water in the tank if the symptoms are that the car runs for a period, cuts out and won't restart until left for a while. Classic MK1 problem caused by rotten fuel filler necks. :banghead:

Hi All…

Still got the same problem despite having cleanedall spark plugs, checked ht leads, replaced tired dizzy cap and cleaned my rotor arm.  Also took the carb off on sunday and cleaned it all out and put it back to make sure all vacuum pipes went on correctly.

Next job is to check the fuel tank.

It is so annoying!!!

Car now starts a little better but when I am driving it, after it heats up, it just starts to choke and completely cuts out and refuses to start again.

Still having to get it started again with power start in the carb which isnt very practical.

Any other ideas would be very useful…thanks :)
