To run carbs, you can probably leave the tank, though you will need a return, which you should have?

You will also need an electric pump and FPR, yes.

I am planning the same thing for mine. I have spoken to a mechanic at the local bike place and he suggests getting a motorbike pump system (Very small and compact and runs off 12v too!) from a breakers. That way you know they are delivering the right sort of fuel pressure.

I have some questions for you now!
Do you have the carbs yet? Which ones have you got?
Do you have a manifold, or are you making it up yourself?
If you are making it, let me know what size tubig you are going to use and where you get it from as I am having a mare getting ally tube in 38mm internal and 42mm external diameter!

I have cut down the original manifold to which I intend welding the new tubes to - if I can get the right size!

My car doesnt have a return to the tank that im aware off so not sure what to do yet… GTI tank and lines?

Hah - Same as me!

I was thinking of getting them to do the manifold for me, but at about ?170, I'll try myself first!

I will let you know how I get on if I make any progress!

Thinking about it, you don't need a fuel return. I remember the bike mechanic telling me that because the fuel is at high flow, but low pressure, when the float chamber fills, the float shuts off fuel supply via a needle valve inside the carbs, so suppy is stopped until level drops again. You can actually see this if you take the bottom off the carb…

In that case, your tank may very well work! I can't see the size of the fuel lines prohibiting fuel flow enough to be of any concern with these carbs, but perhaps bogg bros will be able to tell you more as they have done small engined cars in the past too?!?  :dontknow:

Keep me updated with any progress. There seem to be quite a few people jumping on the bandwagon with this, so perhaps we can start a ""HOW TO" thread once we start making some progress!

well i might change it anyway as i dnt wana have to do it afterwards. still gota source a 16v engine so if you know of neone selling one let me know. ive already got the carbs coming and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator so i might put a fuel tank in the boot aswell.

Only just managed to find one locally to me myself! It is a non runner, but have mostly stipped it and it looks ok. It is lacking compression so think it is just stuck rings as car has been stood with intake disconnected for about 2 years, so moisture could have got in an rusted the rings a bit… Was apparently running well and partially re-built before that though.

Always plenty of them about on EBAY though…

Yeah - A bit annoying, though the plate is not your problem it is the pipes!

As I said, I cut the tubes off the lower part of the 16v manifold, Made up a little jig and ran it over my router, to give a nice flush finish! This is an ideal "Plate" as it is perfectly shaped to bolt to the head. All i need now is to find some aluminium tube the right size to make the runners, though this is proving difficult as it is not a common size. so far, I have been quoted about ?60 for a meter!
