Fuel starvation???

Can anyone help, My 1989 Clipper has just started to judder everynow and then as if its about to run out of petrol then juist carries on as normal.. Sometimes I have stopped completely but when I start the engine it starts and runs fine again….

To be honest the fuel filter defo needs changing but could there be another problem??  ie the fuel pump??  (if there is one)

It could be rust/dirt in the fuel system, or perished fuel lines, too.

The fuel lines seem ok and Ive also been told to check the fuel pipe leading into the tank as this could let off rust as you mention but that also looks ok…

I might have to check those fuel lines again I think… Thanks   :D

i used to have this problem no end of times.

i put an air line down my fuel lines to blow any crap through….

and put new fuel filters on in the rubber hose in the engine bay  right before the carb….

also might be work removing jets in your carb to check for any blockages…
make sure  you do them one by one or draw a diagram and number them so you know which came from where.


when i done this to mine i never had a problem again!!

my mate had same problem, there are pics shown and how to, once done his was purring again, and also changed the filler neck due to rust.
Also if your doing this, replace the in-line fuel filter next to cam cover on left in engine bay, and replace the fuel/vapour seperator which sits in the centre at the front top part of block with 3 pipes leading to it, bolt'd down with the bracket bolts that secure your front part of air filter box

You still getting the problem? I had a similar problem which i appear to have fixed… Previous owner removed the pre-warmer pipe which was right under the fuel filter.
It only really juddered if i'd been driving it for a while (Long journey) or had been spanking it. Guess it might have been heating the fuel before it reached the engine which was making it play up….

Cheers everyone for the help, seems like its a common problem so hopefully when the weekend is here i can have a good look at it…

Yea you are right, it does just seem to happen on a longish journey, never when im just popping here or there…  Most of the time its after ive been doing about 70mph for a while…..

Ill have a good look this weekend though… :D

Had the exact same problem, so before you go spending any money on replacement parts, get the back seat out & take out the sender unit. On the end where the fuel is sucked in, there is a kind of filter. Mines was blocked up with bits of rust. Cleaned it & it runs no problem now. If you don't want to start replacing filler necks & tanks, the best thing to stop it happening again is to keep plenty of fuel in your tank, which I actually rarely do myself. I'm always running it right down although I know I shouldn't.

i had exactly those symptoms yesterday, meesed about with fuel lines, took out the inline lead supliment and seemed to have cracked it..then it started again (bare in mind this was in the middle of a motorway and happened 7 times!)

turns out that no 1 and 2 plug leads are nakered, the were jumping off/coming slightly loose and wont sit onto the plug properly, had all the symptoms of fuel starvation though, and theres also a vaccum type thing on the back of the carb and the actuator arm is worn and popping off, that may be a prob too, just a thought (good old AA) seems ok now but its getting a full ignition going over and replacement carb(s) :)

replaced everything bar plug leads so far and problem still persists, with symtoms more like a fuel problem at the moment, so wheres the best place to get replacement fuel line? im thinking maybe silicon or something good quality, plus a good inline filter and pump etc

Just to let everyone know who helped… I took the advice of removing the fuel sensor from under the rear bench and cleaned it out… I could see the rust in the tank so will tackle that next along with replacing the filler neck.  But as it goes it has been over a week and the problem has definitley stopped :lol:

I know this is short term as I havent removed all the rust from the tank but that will happen shortly but this is defo the best option for curring the starvation situation.. Thanks everyone and thanks for the piccys.. Were a great help… Thats why this site is so good….  :lol:
