Fuel pump problems??

Post

Hi

im driving a 1600 mk1 gti.
i made the stupid mistake a couple of weeks ago of running out of fuel.
Since then I can hear what I think is the fuel pump screaming and then the car cuts outs out. It feels like it's being starved of fuel.
Would the fuel pump  have dragged up dirt from the fuel tank ?
Any ideas here what is happening here any any potential fixes?

Cheers
Denis

I hate to say you problerly have sucked up rust and grit into the fuel system, running out of petrol is not good if you have an old fuel tank.
You can take the cover off under the back seat and have a look at the fuel pick up to see if that is blocked if it's clear and you are still having problems you will need to move further down the fuel line and clear any blockage.
I don't think the early cars have a lift up in the fuel tank like later cabriolet?

also check the inlet on the pump, some have a mesh basket:
