Fuel Problems

Hi I have a mk1 Golf Convertible which I have had for about 4 months, It was my dream car when I was a kid and now I am old I wanted to relive my teenage days. I have a problem with my new toy that on a morning when the car is cold it takes about 5 - 10 mins for the auto choke to kick in and when I am driving it sometimes cuts out as if it is being starved of juice. Does any one have any ideas what could be the problem as I spoke to VW and all they suggested was for me to take it into them for costly repairs. I live in leeds if thats any help.

welcome to the forums.

If you post up a bit more detail such as engine type, is it the standard carb and if its manual or autochoke. Sounds like autochoke but just incase.

What engine/carb is it? If it's the usual Peirburg 2E2 you may find sopme useful info here…

Hi
Cheers for that. Bitten the bullit and taken it to VW who have replaced the Wax stat valve and its still doing not starting properley doesnt seem as if the autochoke wants to kick in.

My car is an 1.8 Auto clipper cabrio on a g plate 1990 its not been modified in any way. Do you think it might be sonething to do with the Temp senders at the front of the car. Or something else.

Bugging me as a want to get it sorted as its a great little car that with a bit of tlc and money I could make it even better.

What modeel webber carb would you say is the best for my car. Sorry for the daft questions but I am as mechanical as a slug.

the peirburg might be ok. dont take it to vw as they won't have worked on a car like your for some time hence swapping parts to see if thats the problem. find an indepentent VW specialist they tend to be ex VW imployers who started on cars like this. they will be able to tune the car or give you advice on what to get.

think the 1.8 is the 34/36 anyone confirm that for me?

Hi there, I've got the exact same car as yourself & I'm the same as yourself mechanically. When I asked for advice here for a similar problem which seemed like fuel starvation, after several bits of advice which didn't cure it, I was told to take the sender unit out from under the rear seat & clean the small gause filter on the inlet, which did have some grit in it. This looks like it has solved the problem as it runs ok, though mines only conked out when I put the boot down. I tried most things that were going to cost nothing or very little first, like changing the fuel vapouriser (the small catchpot thing the fuel goes to before the carb) bought another 2nd hand pierburg carb,(only ?10) but they didn't work.  Hope this helps. Good luck.

Found this link if you do want to buy a weber

As usual, the mk 1 golf's the most expensive carb there, or keep your eyes open on e-bay. It's a 32/34 DMTL. It does say an auto one is available but a mate says he can't see what the difference would be. When I swapped the pierburg carb over on my car it was from a 1.8 manual jetta and there was no difference, but couldn't say about the weber.
