Fitting a Weber carb - throttle linkage problem

G'day from Australia!

I'm a long time lurker in these forums, got some great tips from all of you for my '76 Mark 1.

Based partly on my reading on this site I bought a Weber 32/34 DFT twin-barrel downdraught carb on evilbay, the changeover went fairly smoothly, except for two things.

The air filter doesn't appear to be a standard fitting for this carb, looks like a dodgy job someone's rigged up themselves. It shouldn't be too hard to find an adapter to fit the original filter, or upgrade to a K&N filter.

The real problem is the throttle arm, it's completely different to the one on the original Solex carb. My question is what's the best way to resolve this? Should I find a replacement throttle arm, or is there some way to link a standard golf throttle cable to this one.

The throttle arm on the solex carb had a U-shaped end, with a small, loose pin, with a hole drilled through it, through which the cable passed.

I've tried several different types of clips to hold the cable to the arm and they always break almost immediately, I tried adapting the end of the cable, but I ended up snapping the end off the throttle cable.

I was able to drive home by attaching it with wire, but I'm obviously not willing to drive around like that.

To give a better view of what I'm dealing with, this is the throttle linkage on the original Solex carb:

And this is the throttle arm on the Weber:

Any ideas how I can connect the one to the other?

Purchased in 2001 by my grandpa and bought by me when he moved to Western Australia two years ago.

Future projects:
fix/replace the quarter windows, the previous owner glued them in at some point.
put in electronic ignition
install a manual choke
