Exhaust manifold query.

Post

Hey, guys I’m wondering if the standard exhaust manifold is mandatory ?

I’m thinking about getting a full stainless system fabricated with extractors and besides the extra heat, is there any other issues I should consider? There is a positive lead running to it ( for a pre-heater ? ) do I need that or will I be fine with an aftermarket system ?

I’m in Australia which has a temperate climate so I wouldn’t think that is necessary.

Thanks again.

And while I’m at it, I’d like some suggestions for a decent carb set up that doesn’t cost $500+AUD.

any pics of this positive lead you mention?

main thign with carbs is make sure you fab up some kind of shroud for the warm air feed, otherwise it may ice up under certain conditions. it doesnt need to be particularly cold, as long as theres moisture in the air theres potential for icing.

Though this risk is minimum on aussieland, its worth an extra 10 minutes bending up your old shroud and securing with jubilee clips or whatever ;)

if you go for bolt on carbs though they wont need the warm air feed, main cost is the inlet manifold really

My mistake with the positive lead. That was for the Intake mani.

What do you mean by the main cost being the inlet mani ? Do I need to get a new/updated/modified mani if I put Webber’s or the like on there ?

Disregarding what you said about warm air feed.

well I was assuming you meant a pair of bolt on carbs, those can be had reasonably cheap if you're lucky. the harder part is finding an inlet manifold that suits both the carbs you choose and the cylinder head

if you want one that bolts straight on then there is a couple of weber carbs available, just make sure you get the right fitting kit to suit your car plus check the jets are correct for the engine cc

webers tend to not be so fussy about the warm air shroud, but make sure you swap the carb heater over they dont like it if thats missing.

assuming its a 1.6 or 1.8 engine the 2e2 carb fitted to it is actually pretty good, the trick is knowing how to check and diagnose them properly as its a bit complicated. that and sourcing spares is hard enough over here…
