EW and DX engines

Hi All,
I have just brought a Clipper Cabriolet which i was told was an 87, but now beleive to be an 88 by VIN code.
It has a EW engine, which i beleive to be a 1.6? But on the block it says 1.8?
It was originally a Auto. But the guy i brought it off got another engine and box out of another Golf.
The box is a 4T 020. He has split engine and gearbox, so i have no clutch. Is it a 190mm?
Also the other engine is a DX code. They are both on Carbys. Is this a 1.8?
Does anyone know which is the better engine, and how or why would it have a 1.6 in?
Also will the gearbox be compatible with both?
Thanks
Ben

EW is basically same 1.6 as the mk2 golf EZ code engine. the reason it says 1.8 is vw used the same block casting, they just switched the internals about to reduce the cc.

DX engine is 1.8 GTI lump and is well worth the swap, should see some extra performance. check the head though, if it has injector holes then its not been changed, if not its had a carby head swapped on. no big deal it'll still work ok.

manual 1.6 engines use 190mm clutch, 1.8 use 210mm clutch, check the flywheel you have is 210mm if its not or you dont have one get a 210mm flywheel and clutch kit.

the 1.6 and 1.8 externally are basically identical so you can use either, I'd go for the DX though

Thanks John,
I don't understand why the Clipper would have had a 1.6 engine in though? It wouldn't be anything to do with the fact that originally it was an auto.
Will the 4T 020 Gearbox work o.k with both engines? They came without a clutch, so i will have to buy a 190mm so i can get the car running with the 1.6 engine that's in it. I think i will probably strip down the DX engine and do a rebuild. But i just wan't to get it on the road first!!!

clipper is a low end model i think so thats why, the 4T box is a 4+e I think, so carb ratios with a really tall 5th for eco cruising.  If you go with the 1.6 then the 190mm clutch + fly is ok, but if you fit the 1.8 or plan to then go for a 210mm clutch and flywheel

The buyers guide suggests that Clippers were only available with 1.8 engine. But it also lists the GL and 1.6 models and lists them crossing over with the Clipper in 1985-1988 Is your car definitely a Clipper? Its also quite possible that the car has had a replacement engine and someone replaced the 1.8 with a 1.6.

ETKA has a list of engine codes and years, but it doesn't go down to the detail of which model had which engine. It shows a crossover in cabbys with carb 1.6 and 1.8 engines as above.

Cheers Paul,
I will give that a go. I beleive the car is a clipper as it has a bodykit on and the VIN number ties in with it being 1988! The problem is, we are in Oz and am unsure what import rules would have been. I presume the car would have come out from U.K. As it has a mod plate on. It also has black leather seats, which i am unsure if they were an option for 1988, i beleive you could only get white leather?
