Engine noisy when started

Hi,

1990 Clipper Cabrio ? beginning to wonder if I have bought a pig! (see earlier thread)

When the car starts from cold the engine is very noisy, sounds like it is knocking. Is this normal, I remember a golf driver I had a couple of years ago was noisy on start up. Once warmed up everything seems to quiten down ? is this normal?

car has done 129,000 miles but has been regularly serviced.

Thanks

probably tappets, but worth checking oil levels and giving it a good flush and oil+filter change. use a decent oil.

Put some ATF into the engine oil, run it for a bit, then change the oil + filter.

Thanks for the replies

I dont think the oil or filter need changing as I am fairly certain they were done just prior to me buying it, and the oil does look clean.

So I will have a look at the tappets.

Thanks
