I got my weber set up by John Mowats in Essex, one of the best in the Country (and i know it must be good because Jaymac got his twin webers det up there on Dubboys old LHD car) and mines started to pre-ignite too. Why would the timing come out in a matter of less than two months?

yours could have been caused by a sticking advance diaphagm holding the timing up.

I have a similar issue with my 1992 1.8 T4 Transporter (basically a Golf Block) and stumbled on this thread.
Mine is fitted with a Weber. I've just had an inlet vacuum leak sorted and static timing done. I still have the overun but it isn't as bad as it was.
i'm still thinking timing but my mechanic said he couldn't find any timing marks :dontknow:
Anyways i'm gonna try these things first.
1. Drown the inside of the Weber (engine running) with carb cleaner. try and blow out any nasties (carbon)
2. Change thermostat and flush out the coolant system. Might look at the sensors that trigger the fan too. Want to be sure it isn't running hot.
3. Engine flush and oil change.
The engine doesn't smoke, doesn't seem to use oil BUT i have had problems with oil being blown up the rocker cover breather. Catch tank has helped that tremendously.
Any other thoughts?

strange u should say that, had my clipper tuned a couple of months ago, ran sweet as, i know the carbs worn but the timings out again, after a pretty hot/fast fun she'll pink/run on when turned off for a few seconds.
not as bad as a mini i have though thats 180 out, last time we ran it it kept going, it was so hot and still must of had enough in the carb that it was still turning over for a good 10 -15 minuites with the coil lead taken off and the fuel line removed..!!

funny you should say that. I've sorted mine with a shut off solenoid. I've also converted to LPG (no issues there). When you change from petrol to gas you have to wait for the Carb to drink itself dry. Takes ages with the Weber. I can basically drive (normally) for a good minute or so before it starts to suffer.
