Engine Conversion for 1.6 Carb Mk1

Hello, I've  been thinking about a engine swap/rebuild for 1.6 carb mk1.  Just wanting some advice really on what options i have. Ive got about ?1000 to play with.  Looking for something reliable as my current engine has done 200,000 miles and is currently not running (number of reasons).

Looking for a bit more performance, nothing to extreme tho.  Been looking at a fully reconditioned engine from "The Engine Shop" 1800cc GTi 8V.  What upgrades would be involved with this sort of change and how hard would the change be???

Too much hassle to make it worthwhile, just buy a GTI instead.
