Engine and Exhaust

Post

Hi Guys,

When I start the car, it starts but then cuts off. Also, this particular pattern is continued when I am driving, although when I soon press the breaks the car turns off. Does anyone have any idea why this may be? I potentially think the timing needs to be re-tuned.

Additionally, the exhaust does not sound very healthy as it sounds like a dog breathing really heavily, as a result of this the car is shaking much more.

Any feedback would be appreciated!

might be a problem with the brake servo, take the pipe off the inlet and cap it off see if engine starts/runs better. dont drive it liek that obviously!

look for splits in the carb flange as well

Rubjonny! I could always rely on you mate!…

So i took it to the mechanic, and he tuned (well attempted) tune the timing, it has improved and it is idling at 8 rpm, so when i break now the car isnt as rough as before but the car still remains slightly aggressive. By this i have been advised that the carb needs to be tuned…….

i will see how it goes……but the exhaust is blowing air quite heavily :(

have a look at the rubber flange under the carb, perhaps it has split? what car/engine is it exactly?

if its a later big block the carb flanges can split if the frotn airbox steady bracket/stud is missing or broken as the carb flops about too much with engine movement. this would also explain why it cuts out when brakign as carb may be flopping forward and opening a split in the flange
