DIY Cam Belt Change?

Post

Hi

Silly question but is there anything that should put me off doing this myself? or any top tips?

I take it that I should replace the belt tensioner as well?

Any tips gratefully received

Dead easy job mate : )

People tend to shy away from doing their own timing belts sometimes, "in case something goes wrong" but so long as you have a few tools and take your time doing it then there's nothing to worry about..

Take the top and bottom cambelt covers off - 10mmm bolts at the top and the bottom, and a 5 or 6mm (can't remember tbh!) allen head bolt about halfway up, and your covers are off.
Next thing to do is put a spanner or socket on the crankshaft pulley bolt and spin the engine to TDC. Probably a good idea to paint/tippex the marks so they're easier to see..
Loosen the tensioner and spin it out of the way then remove it completely and slide your belt off.
New tensioner on then new belt on DOUBLE CHECK AND TRIPLE CHECK ALL THE MARKS STILL LINE UP!!
Tension the belt and put your spanner back on the cranskshaft pulley bolt
Turn the engine over twice by hand and re-check your marks

If they still line up you're good to go, if they don't you need to take the belt off, line them up again, turn it over by hand again, re-check the marks again etc until you can turn it over and they still line up.

If its your first timing belt, give it a couple of hours stopping for tea and fags and that, 2nd or 3rd time you'll have it down to 20 minutes:thumbs: HTH!

Take it easy ; )
