A mate of mine has a mk1 cabby on a J plate non GTi.
The cylinder head number is 026 103 373 Q. Does anybody know if this is a solid lifter head and if so could a GTi cam (soild lifter type) be fitted to give it a little more pep?

easiest way tyo know is whip rocker cover off and look at the cam caps, if all there its solid if 1 missing its hydro
but if its the original engien it'll be hydro lifters in a J plate and solid lifter cam wont work in it

Thanks for that. Was hoping to avoid having to take the rocker off just to have a look. I found a list of head numbers here http://www.clubgti.com/archive/index.php?t-220746.html
but it doesnt say what type it is.
It will be original block as everything on the car is original

right well if its deffo original to the car then its hydro lifters they switched 86-87ish. Yours is also hydro lifters BTW!
I woudl use a complete GTI head if it was me, they flow better. go for one without a port between cylinders 3 and 4 as it will fowl the inlet manifold on a carby, plus if you have the original 2e2 carb you'll need to drill a hole here for the coolant feed. no big deal match diameter and angle from old head and drill away
