Cutting out unless foot to floor????

Can anyone help me? Took car for drive tonight (to see my daughter on her birthday!) anyway all seemed fine when driving back then had to stop at mums and go get her car for her as she had left it in train station car park and gone to london, anyway i digress got back in my car started it up, it died kept trying and anyway to cut a long story short the journey home was a nightmare the car only seemed to go when my foot was down to the floor (and even then seemed to be misfiring now and then) whenever I had to slow down or stop it died does anyone have any ideas? Im halfway thru moving house so this couldnt of come at a worse time ( i was tonking it a bit prior to all this, not stupidly just enjoying myself on a high up national speed limit country road)
Any help much appreciated (already looked at fuel filter and that didnt seem to have anything untowards in it, but then it was very dark!)

Last time my 1.8 carb cabby did this i just changed distributer cap and rotor arm due to burnt contacts in cap and its ran fine since.
Hope its as simple as this.

cheers mate, It turned out to be loose wires on the coil (should of been first thing i checked :redfaced: )
