Clipper probs - Tempted to scrap it towards a brand new car.

My clipper ran fine with the original Pierburg carb until last year when it had starting issues.
I bought and had fitted a Weber which transformed the car. That was last November and up until January this year ran fine.
Now everytime I attempt to drive anywhere it cuts out.
There is fuel getting through and the tank and fuel lines are clear. The carb gasket looks fine as was fitted new last year with the carb.
All the earths are now OK but still it won't run.
I have replaced the coil, fuel pump amd much more.
It will start on the driveway and run all day but the oil light starts flashing when the temperature rises.
Is there anyone who can help me with this as the car hasnt been anywhere since January and is just collecting dust and pollen.
I'm even tempted to scrap it towards a new car but this would be a very last resort as I took ages to find this car 3 years ago and I would feel guilty about scrapping it.
Is there anyone is the Bracknell area who knows how to get it going again?

I don't know if it's the same problem I had, because my oil light never came on when the engine was hot, but mine would do the same, it would sit on the drive running on idle fine but when I tried to drive it would cut out within a short distance.

Take your petrol cap off and look at the condition of the fuel filler neck for rust and holes, there is a good chance that if it has never been replaced that it is shot, allowing rust dirt and water into the fuel tank. This isn't a problem when the car is on tick over but when you drive down the road all the dirt gets sucked up to the filter on the end of the fuel tank sender unit as the fuel pump sucks harder and this restricts the flow of fuel and makes the car cut out.

I replaced the fuel filler neck on mine (look in the technical section on left of page) and took the sender unit out (type sender unit in search function for a how to) and checked for condition and spent a while with a magnet and some blue tack fishing as much crap out of the tank that I could, disconnected the fuel line from the inline fuel filter and blow down it to check the line wasn't blocked. I also replaced the fuel pump, fuel vapour seperator, I had replaced the carb for a new weber before doing all this like you have, and I even replaced the hall sender unit in the distributor but I still had the same problem.
the reason for this is I did not manage to get the petrol tank completely clean, to do this you really need to take the petrol tank out and rinse it through properly but I didn't. Instead I took the sender unit back out of the petrol tank and cut a small v out of the filter on the end of the pick up pipe so that it would allow more fuel through.

This has now cured the problem, although I have had to change the inline fuel filter a couple of times since doing it a couple of weeks ago as there was crap still coming through from the tank but it seems to be running through clear now and the inline fuel filters are only a couple of quid so it isn't the end of the world.

hope this is of some help.

Thanks for the tip. However the first thing I did when I bought the car was to replace the fuel filler neck.
I have checked the fuel sender and everything appears to be fine. This problem happened over a period of time and got steadily worse.
Sometimes it would cut out once a week then it was once a day until it refused to go anywhere.
The flashing oil light happened at around the same time.

What condition is your inline fuel filter, is there any crap in it?
Did you clean your tank out thoroughly when you changed the filler neck?
When I cleaned and replaced the parts on our car the filter on the end of the sender unit was spotless, but it would still cut out, it was only as a last resort that I decided to put a cutinto the filter on the end of it and was apprehensive about doing it and to be honest wasn't expecting any improvement but since the car has been running fine.

I would maybe replace the oil pressure switch and run it until hot and see if that stopped the oil light coming on if it were my car but i really can't give you an honest answer if that is the problem.

Well, I took the fuel sender out and blew it out with a airline.I then pulled the pipe off just before the fuel filter and blew that out.
Started it up and off she went. I managed 15 laps of the streets where I live must to the disgust of the local residents mowing their lawns.
Seems that although everything looked ok it was crudded up.
I may have a go at the 'V' cut if and when the problem arises.

All I need to do is give it a good valet and hopefully she's ready for the hot summer?????
