Chugging Along

Hi All

I was hoping for some help/advice if possible

I've got an 1991 cabby and I use it daily and it runs superb. However when I go for longer drives along motorways it starts to bunny hop along, and loses power. It normally happens if I've been driving at 60mph for about half hour. I drop it down gears as it feels like its going to start firing up again, but doesnt. Once i've pulled over, I switch the engine off, and then back on and it runs superb again….its obviously a worry when your on a busy road and you lose all power!

There appears to be a ticking sound coming from the engine, so a mate suggested to change the HT leads, however this ticking comes and goes.  Another mate suggested that I need to change the fuel filter as this could be the cause.

Any ideas/advice would be greatfully recieved, i'm not great at getting my hands dirty but was hoping I maybe able to fix it before I take it to a garage.

Thanks in advance

Andy

The ticking might be your over run Solinoid.

Sounds fuel related, have you checked your fuel filter? Is it full of rust?

spray some WD40 into the lock on your fuel cap.

then clean the tank and fuel lines.

the ticking could be a number of things.

Hi guys

thanks for the advice….a mate of mine who knows a lot more about cars than I do also suggested it could be fuel related….I'll give that a go

Thanks again

could be carb icing but it sounds a little to extreme for that, in my experience you just loose power till it cuts out, rather than bunny hopping to a standstill.
worth a check anyway!  make sure warm air pipe is there, the metal shroud round the exhaust manifold, and the vac lines to the side of the airbox are hooked up. last of all check the warm air air flap actually lifts when the engine is running

with mine it would just slow down gradually no matter what you did, flooring it did nothing etc.  doesnt sound quite the same but as i say its worth a look.
fuel filter is always the 1st thing I change on carbys as its so cheap n easy, if the old one looks to have metal bits & rust in it then its time to check the fuel tank & filter for rust
