Chappin problem

Hey,

Ave recently ran into a fairly major problem. Basically the top end is making a horrible loud chappin sound. Its very difficult to start as well. I have to pump the throttle loads while turning the engine, and on some occasions it will fire flames out my weber! . It will also not idle, anything below 2500rpm it just wants to die.

So first thoughts were valve clearances, needing to get it shimmed. I really just want someone to just back my theroy up with getting it shimmed before i spend more money on this car.

The head was skimmed (6 thou) recently, and i swapped the camshaft for another MK2 GTI one (as the one i had had bad markings on it).

Comments appreicaited guys!

Check your valve timing is correct - it sounds to me like it's out, especially if flames are coming out of your carb.

There are timing marks on the camshaft gear and the intermediate gear next to the crankshaft gear - they must line up correctly or you'll end up with the pistons and valves colliding (this may be causing the loud noise you've got).

There's loads more detail in the Haynes manual on how to align the crankshaft and camshaft - post back if you need any more info though
