Carb prob now sorted with a twin webber conversion, cheers!
When I go to turn off the engine it stops, fires up again, struggles and then dies. Then it won't start at all.
Leave it say 3-5 mins and the engine starts beautifully and idles at a perfect 900-950rpm!
The car also seems a little sluggish on take off, but once the initial pull is there it flies along.
After driving it with normal tickover it stops fine.
There is NO air leaks, (have just had this checked)
Any idea's?
Cheers, Sooty.

Not something silly like an arm sticking that just needs a little oil?

Either that or an internal carb fault…air leaks still my favourite.

Still sounds like an air leak to me; It runs faster than it should and when you shut it down it runs on.

Local mechanic sprayed some stuff on and around it and said "def no air leaks there!"

Id suggest you have a really close look at all the small bore vacuum lines and see if any are split, chafed, cracked or otherwise holed or hanging off.
They usually split where theyre pushed on to the carb or other vacuum ports and they can allow air in even tho visually (just a brief glance) would appear to show otherwise.
I used to see so many of these kinds of easy fix faults.
Have a nosey and see what you can find. 8)

Ha… the mechanic said something about wax type stuff being inside and maybe that was the problem….rubjonny said
sounds liek a waxstat and/or 3/4 point unit failure. check the 2e2 faq for loads of info on how to check these carbs for faults & fix em.
Will look at FAQ…. cheers.

So do I get new one and put old Carb back on? No… put the twin Webber on.
I know it's nothing much to some of you guys but WOW! What a difference my car is! Like a new engine! And ALOT quicker! weeeeee!
Wife not driven it but i'm sure she'll be pleased.
So now I have a Carb (Auto choke) that I don't know if its 100% ok or not! But it's on E-Bay with my other golf bits, my user name H7AKE.
Cheers for all the help guys!

yeh it's a one piece thing…. paid ?50 for it! and it was brand new! Bargain me thinks, as the car is transformed. The pick up acceleration is 5x better maybe more. Very very impressed.
