Car runs the same with far left dizzy lead disconnected?

Car has been running and sounding like an old beetle, unplugged each lead and they all had an effect apart from the far left one, theres a spark from the dizzy to the lead and when i pulled it off the spark plug end i felt the sparks going up my arm :) LoL even though i had rubber gloves on?

I took the spark plug out and attached it to the lead and i put an old spark plug in the hole to block it, i started up her up with the plug on lead on a piece of wood but i could not see a spark, should i be able to see a spark going across the plug? if not how do i test it's working?

Also i am assuming this is the problem why i can't get the C0 levels down past 2%.

Thanks

With the plug out of the block and connected to the lead, you will only see a spark if it is resting on the rocker cover or block as it needs to earth out, which it does when screwed into the block…

Try it again with the plug threads in contact with the rocker cover.

Thanks, ok i did that and there is a spark and i tested it on 2 plugs both the same, i re attached it and it seemed better, but first gear was fine but as soon as i was changing into second it was like somone and pull the lead out as i got the juddery (beetle) effect again.

Does the lead carry more current through it the more you put your foot down? maybe the lead is kanackerd under load?

btw - wherabouts in Swansea are you i am from Llansamlet :)

The plugs are new, even tried the old ones back in and it's the same, I have not changed the leads, do you think that could be the problem as it's only been like this sice i did the service.

I'll try the leads from my valver on her and see if that cures it

Sounds more like an ignition fault to me because you say it's intermittant. If the plugs are new and ur still getting the problem, try the cap, rotor arm and leads. They're all fairly cheap and sometimes difficult to find fault with to the untrained eye. if it's still misfiring then you'll need to get the compression checked. if the compression is down the head will need to be removed. HTH :)

Thanks, all those items are new apart from the leads, i'll swap them over and see if that cures it.

So can a lead work but go faulty under load?

If it's damaged or very old, then yes possibly…

I live in Ynystawe by the way. Work on the enterprise zone.
What's your car look like? I might have seen you around!

You may have seen mine:

You have spaces in the image file names - code doesn't like it. needs %20 for a space!?!?!?

I have a mate who has a garage near town - Kingsway Motors on Gors Avenue. He is a VW specialist, whos brain/services are often called upon when I need help!

His name is Andy. 01792 654842
Here he is…

Thanks for the image tips!

The mk1 pic is rubbish, it's been under cover for 4 months and i am now getting it together :) will take better pics soon!

yeah i took my mk2 to andy last year, only problem is that he is well busy, and i need the car for work so leaving it there for a week is no good!

I might take it to him to get the mk1 set up, although i really just need the timing set correctly, and there is a guy down the enterprise zone - J&P Auto (Behind pc world) He's a bit spaced out but seems to know his stuff LoL

I'd love to see your MK1 up close, do you go to the cgti meets up the old inn?

Don't look too close, LOL!

I haven't been recently, though I might pop up now the nights are a bit warmern and brighter!
Drop me a PM next time you go up and I'll see what I can do. The wife is not keen on me going to meets like that though - Gives me ear ache about spending too much time with the car and not her and the little 'un!

I haven't been to J&P's - Mostly air cooled stuff isn't it?
I know what you mean about Andy's. I never leave my car there. I go down and use his tools/ramps/knowledge and do the jobs myself - The benefits of having a mate like that!

Finally managed to get a set of leads - ?20 K&J Brakes and Hose!

And it fixed the problem, so chuffed, just got the rest of the central locking in and change the clocks over to MPH ones and fit a stereo :)
