can our engines selfdestruct when the cambelt goes?

I've seen a feature on a garage website which says:

There are two types of engines that use timing belts, Interference Engines and Non-interference Engines. On an interference engine, if the timing belt slips or breaks, the piston can crash into an open valve causing serious engine damage by bending valves and breaking pistons.  Non-interference engines will usually not self destruct, but in either case if the belt fails, the engine will immediately shut down leaving you stranded.

Question is which one is ours?

I have a 1500cc 1980 gls.

Any thoughts?

Lee.

it's the expensive one to fix  :(  most vw engines are interferance engines, if the belt goes a big bill comes your way!
