I may be wrong but i don't think vw ever gave any details on how frequently to change it on mk1s. It's a pretty easy and cheap job to do tho so if you don't kno when it was last done then i'd recommend doing it. It's a good idea to change the belt tensioner at the same time also

Don't quote me on this, but I believe its 3 years or 36,000 miles.

best get mine done then lol.

I'm still waiting for my haynes manual to arrive from Ebay. is it simple to check the belt??

hope it's not like the VR4 I have were it would be easier to plat fog than take the cover off to check the cambelt

its not too bad. You might need to remove the engine mount bolt and raise the engine slightly, to wiggle the tensioner on/off. Also the crank pulley bolts will be tight (need an impact wrench, ideally) and you might round them off in an attempt at removal. Put the engine at TDC and mark the position of the crank, cam and intermediate shaft with Tipp-ex, before you take off the old belt and you'll be a happy bunny.

Twist it and see if there's any tiny cracks in the rubber.

if in doubt……CHANGE IT!!

its a cambelt and if it snaps your engine is dead pretty much.

As it is common sense to change tensioner also, by look of your tensioner, i'd say change it bud
