Cam timing question
Hey guys, my friend recently bought a mk1 1.6 carb. Anyways it is a non runner. Only needs cambelt as it snapped. We noticed the campulley is not a vw pulley. But we counted all the teeth and compared it ect and it seems to be exactly the same as a original BUT there is NO timing marks on it (most probably pirated part) But anyways how can we set the cam timing correctly without the mark???

As you pull the campulley round it'll flick into place at 1 point, this will be your TDC (give or take a tooth).

Are you sure there's no marks on it, some of them are very feint. Try setting the cam so both lobes on No1 are pointing up at equal angles and look where the mark should be, perhaps get a fine wire brush and clean it a little. If there definitely is no mark I could explain how to wotk out where the mark should be if you take the pulley off.

There is no mark, the pulley looks like a new pulley. Thats why I am thinking it must be a pirate part. We had set the cam where the lobes basically are equal. The motor started and idels fine. Set the ignition timing to 6deg, took it for a CO2 setting but there is still this miss when you put your foot down. Must be the cam timing thats off a tooth or somewhat

The other option would be to get the correct pulley? theres sometimes a flat or a pip on the pulley (its a flat on mine)
